I came with unrealistic expectations: I thought the penguins would have been a little more lively, a little more… curious. I thought they would have pecked at our feet, annoyed us, etc. But no, they just stood there, molting. I wonder, what goes on in their heads? But I’ve come to realize that the penguins don’t really care about us! They merely acknowledge our presence and just go about doing whatever they want. At one point on Salisbury Plain, a King penguin started walking towards me. I was so excited, elated that I was its object of curiosity. Then, it walked right by me. Behind me was the penguin colony, so obviously, it had its own ideas, and humans such as me have no significance to it. Now I see the better side: I love the fact that we are not a nuisance. I love the fact that we are not an intrusion. Life on South Georgia can go on unharmed and we can observe everything as it would usually be.
